In 2022 Mexico produced around 650 million liters of tequila and 14 million liters of mezcal. Many of the brands that produce these distillates could implement many of the business, agricultural and community strategies that we propose. Instead of chopping down healthy forests for more land, one can acknowledge that agaves are the ideal crop to spur ecosystem rehabilitation of desertified areas; they require only a liter of water a year and have a 98 percent survival rate without any human intervention - a critical fact in light of how typical reforestation efforts focus on the introduction of trees, which demand constant water and maintenance, and have only a 15 percent average survival rate.
